As the second largest economy in the world, China has positioned itself as a forerunner of sustainable development, guided by the national development vision known as ‘Ecological Civilization’. In 2015, the Chinese Government expressed an interest to join PAGE, starting at the provincial level in Jiangsu – the second richest province in the country but faced with several challenges, including high population density, environmental degradation, and a reliance on heavy industry.
Since 2015, PAGE has supported Jiangsu Province in macro-level green economy policy monitoring and sectoral policy advisory services in areas such as green industrial development and green trade, as well as assisting enterprises in capacity building. In 2021, the Province announced and implemented a series of policies to further promote the inclusive green economy in the 14th Five-Year Plan period. Moving forward, PAGE will continue its close partnership with Jiangsu Province through further dialogue and policy advice to support the long-term sustainable outcome of Jiangsu’s inclusive green economy transition.
The partnership in Jiangsu Province has contributed to progress towards SDG 4 (Quality Education), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), 12 (Sustainable Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action) and 17 (Partnerships for Goals).
