2021 Annual Report

Peru has an abundance of natural resources that serve as the backbone of its economy with more than 50 per cent of its territory covered by forest. Resource-driven growth has degraded the environment over the years, resulting in water and air pollution, soil erosion and deforestation, affecting all segments of society, particularly the most vulnerable.

Peru started to turn sustainability concerns into drivers of government policy and long-term prosperity with its Bicentennial Development Plan that set the stage for Peru to join PAGE in 2014. PAGE has since supported long-term change through the integration of green growth into national planning, the implementation of green sectoral and thematic policies and capacity development. Important milestones include a 2018 National Competitiveness and Productivity Policy, integrating sustainability; sectoral and thematic reforms related to  green jobs, green industry, teleworking and urban transport; the introduction of IGE courses into national curricula and strengthened capacity on forward-looking policy analysis.

PAGE started a gradual phase-out of support from Peru in 2019, with a sustainability plan developed and implemented in close collaboration with GIZ Green Economic Transformation (GET) project. As the theme of green growth has become even more relevant in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, Peru submitted a proposal to PAGE in 2021 for targeted green economic recovery support with a focus on green jobs and entrepreneurship.
